New Bern Ballet Company
NBBCo is the performance company associated with New Bern Ballet. The company provides an opportunity for NBB students to extend their education and skills beyond the classroom and share their art with our community. Auditions are held in August for NBB students wanting to participate in the company. Company members rehearse outside of their regular class times throughout the year. Performing several times during the year, company members strive for higher levels of achievement and fulfillment. We have many exciting performances planned for the 2010/11 performance season and hope that you'll enjoy them all.
We have an exciting and busy Spring season planned. We will be participating in the Festival of Fun again this year, which is held the second Saturday in April. We've previously performed Tales of Beatrix Potter and Carnival of the Animals at this fun event. We are pleased to announce that the Company will be performing Peter and the Wolf for this year’s festival.
Peter 'n
the Wolf
Peter 'n the Wolf Is a children's story written and composed by Sergei Prokofiev in the USSR during 1936. The show was commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow, and the goal was to write a new musical symphony for children. The intent was to cultivate "musical tastes in children from the first years of school." Intrigued by the invitation, Prokofiev completed Peter 'n the Wolf in just four days! Come spend some time in the forest with Peter when he accidently lets his duck out of the garden, and learn why his Grandpa said to stay out of the meadow!
Pas de Quatre
Pas de Quatre is a ballet divertissement choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845, by the suggestion of Benjamin Lumley, Director of His Majesty's Theatre to music composed by Cesare Pugni. A most famous ballet divertissement, it was performed by the four most famous Ballerinas of its time: Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Marie Taglioni. Pas de Quatre captured the essence of the Romantic style as the ballerinas danced with demure lightness, delicacy, and poise. The steps demanded that each area of classical ballet technique was executed. These areas include adagio movements, petite allegro, grand allegro, fast footwork, graceful changes of position, and the elegant and fluid arm movements that have become a signature element of Pas de Quatre. NBB is please to restage this piece and share some of the rich history of classical ballet.
Swan Lake
Another classic ballet with music composed by Peter Tchaikovsky. The story, initially in four acts, was fashioned from folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger, and the ballet was premièred by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1877. Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings, both choreographically and musically, on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Leo Ivanov. Their staging was performed by the Imperial Ballet on January 15, 1895 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. For this revival, Tchaikovsky's score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo. NBB's interpretation of Swan Lake will be a shortened, narrated version sure to enthrall and captivate even the youngest audience members.
